Your mother was a Fuzz
and your father smelled of OverdriveDistortion, boost, fuzz, overdrive are the most popular effects in guitar player arsenal. And the main reason is to make you sound dirty. Ok, and maybe hold a lil' longer, I mean sustain that note.
For the best results you want one of those puppies to be the first in your effects pedal chain. But make exception for Wah-Wah and put it upfront for better colouring. This is not a hard rule and its a good idea to experiment with your pedals order. WARNING - you might get unexpectedly awesome results.
Here is my take on all that crunch 'n' fuzz and here's the combined result of that quest (not in a chronological order):
Gain - that's what you're trying to increase. Boosters are in this category. They first appeared in '60s and names like Vox Bass/Treble Booster and Dallas Rangmaster Treble Booster still ring the bell for many musicians out there. That's the sound of Jimmy Page, Brian May, Eric Clapton from that time. Currently most of the pedal companies make their own version of booster.
Overdrive is the second link in a chain. OD is the most popular branch of all. Look for "overdrive" in the name of the pedal. They're designed to recreate the sound of an overdriven amplifier. There's no pedalboard w/o one.
Classic pedals are:
Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer Overdrive
- the oldest model made by Ibanez and Maxon in 1979-81. This is the sound of Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
- followed footsteps of TS808 model as well as TS-10.
Carlos Santana, Greg Howe, Monte Montgomery (on acoustic guitar)
MXR Micro Amp

Zakk Wylde' choice
DOD is also followed the Ibanez footsteps with their own models.
- Distortion - all kinds of. Full on sound alteration, squashin', compression, EQin'.
Classics are:MXR Distortion Plus
in reality is an overdrive pedal, despite of its name.
that's the sound of Randy Rhoads on
Ozy Osbourne's Mr. CrowleyProCo Rat
first released in '79, probably is the most favorite of all distortions. Did I mentioned its heavy?
John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel
Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal
first issued 'round '78.
Marshall Shred Master is a newest hard player on the distortion market.
- Fuzz - that was the beginning. Invented even before the boosters to recreate the sound of saxophone on the guitar. What you hear as a riff for Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction is Keith Richards playing through Maestro Fuzz-Tone.
Class of Fuzz includes:Dallas-Arbiter FuzzFace
is featured on a lot of Jimi Hendrix' solos.

It's practically impossible to get that kinda thick, full body sound from modern pedals or software simulators. And, also, did you notice how great the song is? :).. ooh, I love you..
I wanna say big THANK YOU to all of my guitar playing friends who helped me with this magic ....
