Il precedente “Redux”, ci aveva gonfiato a livello fisico, dall'interno.
“Lunar Surphase”, da una parte ci liscia il pelo, dall'altra ci fotte con guanti in lattice monouso.
“Redux” era, atonale, folle, gas intestinale in libera uscita creativa, surreale, zappiano, avant, ipnotico; patologico.
Questo, continua il gioco della libera uscita su scale da scapicollo, ma, prova a farci muovere il culo, fra scherzetti ritmici da videogame e schitarrate più decise.
Alla bisogna, incubi etnici a profusione.
Ogogo, sono: il chitarrista russo steso al sole della California Igor Grigoriev, il trombonista Rodney Oakes, e il trombettista e flautista Andrew Solovyov.
L'elettronica deforma tutto, il Dalì dell'ultimo istante avrebbe apprezzato.
Amanda Lear, avrebbe ballato volentieri questi brani, con soltanto una pelliccia indosso.
Figo vero?
In questa occasione, Igor tien stretto il timone fra le mani, ed affiorano demoni e befane da non dire.
Semplicemente fra le musiche più folli del mondo.
E fra le più ostiche.
Rilascia una certa dipendenza stordita e sorridente.
E lascia una frattura, che non credo, il silenzio possa lenire.
Prog oltre lo spasmo, le convulsioni son un piacere.
Assolutamente artistici, assolutamente onesti, oltre ogni compromesso.
Un tour de force, in funzione random, che include ogni mio / nostro / vostro incubo.
Se ne esce malconci e sorridenti, e vien voglia quasi d'inserire un altro gettone sulla giostra.
Devo bere di più.....
Come per “Redux”:
Statevi di molto, ma di molto accorti, nell'acquisto.

Igor - LUNAR SURPHASE: Do a search on this guy (on our page search, inside the 'zine) & you'll find out we've been reviewing a lot of material from him... some "hardcore" jazz/improv-only listeners won't be able to grok this... you have to be open to the experimental (with emphasis on mental) to be able to enjoy the ride his guitars take you on... definitely in the electronic zone, & with little to no mercy for those who demand rigid form, you'll still find complex & ultimately satisfying rhythm, melody (of a sort) & speed-up/slow down songs that take you to (& through) the outer reaches of spatial planes you didn't even know existed. In fact, I find myself wondering if this isn't music played sdrawkcab from another (unknown) dimension.. ha! ha! There are some very intriguing moments here, & "Autoportrait With Ginja" certainly stood out as a winner amongst the 15 tracks that Igor plays for you on this CD. The addition of trumpet from Andrei Solovyov on "Connect With OGOGO" demonstrates pure genius, especially once Igor's guitar lead chimes in! My favorite track, though, is "Can You Feel It", which strangely enough seems to have some similar rhythm tricks to the old Parliament/P-Funk stuff... a superb adventure, to be sure... if you can't "feel" this, buy your burial plot now, as yer' dead already! Is this "jazz"? Absolutely not... Is it "rock"? Most assuredly no! What it is is Igor's (somewhat) warped interpretations of the rays traversing the universe & morphed into a strictly entertaining CD that gets a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from me for adventurous listeners everywhere, & an "EQ" rating of 4.8 (5 is highest, 1 low).! Ogogo - Lunar Surphase (CD)
This is a electronic, glitchy drum machine avant-garde piece by Russian composer Igor Grigoriev. Lunar Surphase is an adventure through broken video game consoles of 1980s past. This really reminds me of those old Atari games that no one has ever heard of, but upon inserting the cartridge it becomes worth it for the strange soundtrack alone. There is a definite art gallery vibe to this collection. Listening to Lunar Surphase makes me feel as if I was transported to an exhibit surrounded by obsolete Commadores, Casios, drum machines and midi synths. For the most part the electronics never get more complicated than riding an interesting sound up and down the spectrum of notes on a keyboard, so it is refreshing when other instruments such as circus like guitars or jazzy trombones and trumpets make appearances in the mix to continuously change up the moods. Even though there is are elements of spazz and chaos in these compositions, Ogogo manages to maintain a relaxing but bizarre zone out pace throughout the whole Lunar Surphase album.

Ciò che non ti attendi accada: questo è Ogogo. Se ti aspetti un artista dell'avanguardia jazz, ti aspetti comunque una lineare condotta strumentale, che dia spazio all'improvvisazione, ma dentro limiti e confini di canoni musicali. Igor Grigoriev (la natalità russa è palese) non solo si cela dietro il proprio monicker, ma anche dietro ogni regola mentalmente aperta sui codici sonori. Così anche in questo nuovo full-length, il terzo di cui ci occupiamo nelle nostre pagine, la schizofrenia è conduttrice dei grovigli che mescolano la collaborazione dei tre musicisti. Spesso Grigoriev è solo, mentre saltuariamente, come nel caso di "Redux", è il trombone di Rod Oakes a sottolineare gli arrangiamenti del russo, ed altre volte ai due, come in questo caso, si aggiunge la tromba di Andrew Solovyov, il quale fin dalla fine degli anni '70 presta al Nostro la propria tecnica di maestro di fiati. Il più classico dei terzetti jazz: chitarra elettrica, trombone e tromba, tastiere; invece l'avanguardia che inventano è oltre sé stessa in quanto concetto artistico. La iii Records investe molto del proprio credito nei confronti del russo: la label, votata al jazz, affida la propria peculiare attitudine ai suoi progetti, corrisposta nel caso specifico da una produzione corposa e ravvicinata nel tempo. Questo però risulta il limite principale: spesso si ha l'impressione che Ogogo corra troppo, ed in maniera eccessivamente anarchica. Il suo 'essere avanti' è oltre la mente aperta e ricettiva. Quel barlume razionale che abbiamo apprezzato in "Linden" ed in parte in "Redux", qui decade totalmente verso gli abissi della sua creatività. Già in apertura si deduce che "Lunar Surphase" sarà un album ostico: "Levitate Your Grape" ha il pregio di declinare in musica le ossessioni frenetiche del quotidiano nelle sue mille scale schizoidi di synth, con il limite però dell'incomunicabilità tra l'artista e chi lo ascolta. Stesso discorso che vale pure per "Mr. Greenhill", dove la sei corde suonata da Igor (maestro di chitarra presso alcune facoltà americane) sostituisce la base elettronica nelle scale. Ricorda molto la sperimentazione jazz degli anni '70 (periodo che vede artisticamente nascere il Nostro e che sicuramente ha influenzato indelebilmente la sua carriera), ma risulta troppo lisergica a chi non ha l'abitudine a queste sonorità. Accattivante invece "Connect With OGOGO", vuoi anche per la profondità apportata dal trombone di Rod Oakes tra gli accordi di chitarra elettrica e le sperimentazioni strumentali di ogni tipo, in questo caso su binari riconducibili verso immaginari più abbordabili. Lo stesso vale per "M.E.", introspettiva nella sua calma apparente, ossessiva nell'intromissione degli strumenti. È la parte finale che riserva la maggior fruibilità: quando la musica si riallinea con il jazz, 'free' ma consono, brani come la title-track o la sognante lentezza di "The Love Of OGOGO" creano la possibilità di aumentare notevolmente il bacino di interesse nei confronti del maestro californiano, questo anche grazie a percussioni regolari e simmetriche. L'ennesimo lavoro di difficile captabilità da parte di Grigoriev e dei suoi due compagni di avventura, il cui limite è guardare troppo avanti: chissà nella sua mente quali orizzonti ha superato nel concepire l'arte il buon Igor, ma il nostro augurio è che la possibilità per un'ampia schiera di appassionati di 'raggiungerlo' nel suo cosmo sia il frutto di conquiste immediate.

OGOGO: Lunar Surphase - review by Sea Of Tranquility
ONONO? That's the reaction some listeners may have to OGOGO when they push play on Lunar Surphase — a cleverly titled album that dares you to expect the unexpected. Based on the avant-garde improvisations of Russian guitarist/composer/arranger/conductor Igor Grigoriev, the often-atonal music on his sixth OGOGO project is held together via sizzling strands of techno-gibberish and occasional mind-blowing solos ("Too Much" and the title track) that demonstrate Igor knows his way around actual song structures. Add Andrei Soloyov's trumpet and flute to burbling songs like "Dali" and "Autoportrait With Ginja" — and slide in the unwieldy but fascinating sounds of Rod Oakes' MIDI trombone on "Can You Feel It" — and you've got some serious eclectic music that will either wake you up or make you want to hit somebody.

Der aus Russland stammende in Amerika verweilende Experimentalgitarrist Igor Grigoriev entwickelt sich mit seinem Projekt Ogogo langsam aber sicher zum Stammgast im “kt” und überrascht in kürzester Zeit mit seinem sechsten Release “Lunar Surphase”, das natürlich auch wieder über die japanische Tonträgermanufaktur III Records das Licht der Welt erblickt.
Schon auf seinem letzten Album “Redux” war der amerikanische Musikprofessor Rodney Oakes mit seiner Trompete zu hören, der dieses Mal auch wieder Akzente setzt und noch Unterstützung durch Andrew Solovyvov erhält, der ebenfalls Trompete bläst und zu dem noch Flöte spielt. Alle zu vernehmenden Aufnahmen für “Lunar Surphase” entstanden rund um den Globus in folgenden Städten: Los Angelos, Madrid, Lisabon, Rom und Venedig, aber klingen wie aus einem Guss!
Inhaltlich erlebt der geneigte Hörerkreis auf der CD “Lunar Surphase” eine avantgardistische Reise, welche den kosmischen Wahnsinn von Igor Grigoriev preisgibt, der Salvatore Dali, Marquis De Sade, Grigori Rasputin und das komplette Weltall miteinander vereint. Heißt, echten Kunstfreaks dürfte diese “wilde” Zusammenstellung gefallen, dem Rest hingegen ehr nicht!
Musikalisch gehört Igor Grigoriev zum dem Kreis der Protagonisten, die durch absolute Eigenständigkeit bzw. Individualität überzeugen. Mit dem Tonträger “Lunar Surphase” knüpft er konsequent an die vorherigen Opera an und offeriert eine experimentelle Variante des Stiles Jazz, welche zwischen Stringenz, Monotonie und Chaos schwankt. Des Weiteren schafft der Akteur mit seinen Mitstreitern eine ausgewogene Mischung aus Rhythmik und Lärm, wodurch diese neue Arbeit einer weiteren spannenden Achterbahnfahrt gleicht. Diejenigen, die Tonkunst suchen, welche unvorhersehbare Momente aufweist, müssen Ogogo unbedingt antesten, da in diesem Punkt definitiv eine Stärke von Igor Grigoriev Kompositionen bzw. Tracks liegt.
Zu den absoluten Anspieltipps dieser Publikation “Lunar Surphase” gehören die Stücke ‘Mr. Greenhill’ und ‘Dali’, welche im Besonderen durch ihre elektronisch erzeugten Rhythmen im Hintergrund auffallen, die ein wenig in die Richtung IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) & Breakcore tendieren.
Die sehr abgedrehte Gestaltung des Digipacks nahmen die Künstler Oksana Ericson und Post1 vor, wodurch dieses Oeuvre den passenden Rahmen erhält – sehr fein!
Fazit:
Individuen, die echte Art im Bereich Musik suchen, welche nur so vor Innovationen und geistiger Freiheit strotzt, dürfte diese neue Erscheinung “Lunar Surphase” von Ogogo begeistern, die sich ausschließlich im Kosmos des Interpreten Igor Grigoriev abspielt und dadurch vielleicht ein wenig weltfremd bzw. von einem anderen Stern klingt.
