Description

Product Description

An extraordinary, powerful connection exists between feeling and feeding that, if damaged, may lead to one relying on food for emotional support, rather than seeking authentic happiness. This unique workbook takes on the seven emotions that plague problem eaters — guilt, shame, helplessness, anxiety, disappointment, confusion, and loneliness — and shows readers how to embrace and learn from their feelings. Written with honesty and humor, the book explains how to identify and label a specific emotion, the function of that emotion, and why the emotion drives food and eating problems. Each chapter has two sets of exercises: experiential exercises that relate to emotions and eating, and questionnaires that provoke thinking about and understanding feelings and their purpose. Supplemental pages help readers identify emotions and chart emotional development. The final part of the workbook focuses on strategies for disconnecting feeling from food, discovering emotional triggers, and using one’s feelings to get what one wants out of life.

The author believes that once you figure out emotions it will fix food, and that your body knows your healthy weight better than you do. Well their are so many other factors besides emotions that contribute to emotional eating such as sugar is addictive, for some bread is addictive, biologically what Happens with cravings after you eat a cookie (they increase), habits, tiredness level, less protein/ less veggies means more cravings, and neurotransmitter level. This book is a GREAT step in helping you solve your eating issues but it’s not going to fix it completely. Although, I would recommend purchasing it as part of your journey because the concept of emotions needs at least a book and not just a chapter.

Truly very helpful workbook. Im a therapist myself and I have a tendency to buy self-help workbooks, start them, and then lose interest, but this is the only one I''ve finished in it''s entirety.

I love that this is NOT a diet workbook, and instead helps you work through whatever "stuff" keeps getting in the way of efforts to be healthy.

Karen R.Koenig again does a great job with reasonable strategies on how to help yourself is you have any weight issues, or eating disorders. It can be used as a tool to help clients if you are a therapist, but it is written in easy, accessible language to anyone who wants to use a self help book to learn how to eat healthier, instead of "mindless binging", or to stop using food as a way to self sooth, such as eating when stressed, sad, angry. It helps a person by using extremely easy charts to start to become more aware of identifying WHAT they may have been feeling at a particular time of the day, and HOW they responded with eating habits. This makes a person STOP, and THINK about their habits, and offers specific ways to combat food addiction/eating disorders. Highly recommended. Karen.R. Koenig is a very seasoned therapist in treating easting disorders, and has an excellent reputation.

I''ve worked with folks who struggle with eating disorders for nearly 3 years now. This workbook continues to be my favorite. The material is insightful, approachable, and meaningful. I like that it even has some humor in it (and it''s not cheesy). This workbook is so good that I''m even going to lead a woman''s self care group, with this workbook as the central focus. It''s a helpful piece of work for anyone, not only the eating disorder recovery community. Thank you Karen! Your work is powerful medicine!

This helped me put things into perspective that I hadn''t thought of before. I can''t afford to see a specialist and there aren''t any meetings in my area so this was great to help get me started on the road to healing and losing weight.

I recommend this book, I bought it because I had thought of therapy for years, but, never felt it was a necessity but I knew that for me handling emotions is not easy and as a result I would instead look for solace in things like eating or running away from situations. I was very suprised to find that the author at times was describing me and that was both shocking and a relief. The book gave me more confidence as well as hope and those are two big things mainly I think because its clear reading it that we humans are similar we are all flawed, we all make a mess of things sometime, but, we are capable of reflection and changing ourselves. It sounds trite but sometimes you need reminding of that - and to embrace all we are negative and positive. The book is aimed at people who have an unhealthy relationship with food and have difficulty loosing weight because of that. It starts off by discussing what emotions are and why not managing them can led to negative behavoirs, it then has an individual chapter for what the author considers key emtions; guilt, shame, helplesses, anxiety, disappointment, confusion and loneliness. Each chapter describes the emotion, its purpose and what value it can have as well as how not really coping with it can lead to negative results. At the beginning, in the middle and at the end of each chapter there is a self reflection or study section where you need to write down your experiences and feelings on reading the chapter, for example ''''How does the subject of shame make you feel uncomfortable?''''. You need to be honest and able to do this alone, at a time when you can reflect and think - and I put aside 30 minutes each week on a Sunday. I haven''t got to the end and have missed many weeks but it has really helped me come to terms with my negative feelings and how ''''normal'''' people handle emotions. In fact I''d never really thought about their purpose before. I think if you are looking for a quick fix for weight issues this is not the place to visit, but, if you are at the stage when you want to relfect on what you can do to improve yourself and your existance as well as those around you, its really excellent. In reality it would make more sense to have a therapist who was specialised in this type of treatment but not all of us have that luxury., and, not all of us would find that easy. So its not perfect and its not a subsitute but I found it a useful tool, thought provoking, with interesting ideas and concepts that made me really question myself and embrace thoughts both negative and positve.
